Amazon.com Product Description
Tamron's high-power 18-250mm zoom lens is a photographer's dream come true. While conventional 35mm film cameras typically require two lenses to cover 28-388mm, the Tamron 18-250mm lens does it in one, with a 13.9x zoom level delivering enormous photographic freedom in a single compact housing. The life of a digital photographer has never been better.

Despite achieving the ultra telephoto capabilities of a 388mm lens (35mm equivalent), this Tamron zoom lens sports an extremely compact optical system. Unlike previous Tamron lenses, the lens optimizes the power distribution of the entire optical configuration without using XR glass, letting you achieve both ultra-high-power magnification and a minimal size. In addition to offering low dispersion (LD) glass to eliminate chromatic aberration and sharpen ultra-long shots, the lens offers such special materials as hybrid aspherical elements and anomalous dispersion (AD) glass to achieve three goals at once: increased magnification, compact size, and improved image quality.

Macro Photos and Fighting Glare
The Tamron 18-250mm is great for macro photos, too, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.5 letting you fill the frame with a subject approximately the size of a business card. As a result, you can easily and conveniently enjoy close-up (macro) photography of flowers, insects, and more. Tamron has also adopted various countermeasures against ghosting and flare, common problems in digital photography. The lens employs internal surface coating and new multilayer coating technology to minimize reflections that occur when light enters through the front element, while also reducing image-degrading effects caused by the imagers themselves.

  • Lens construction: 13 groups and 16 elements
  • Diagonal angle of view: 75 to 6 degrees (33 to 23 feet)
  • Horizontal angle of view: 65 to 5 degrees (36 to 19 feet)
  • Vertical angle of view: 46 to 3 degrees (21 to 19 feet)
  • Diaphragm blade number: 7
  • Minimum aperture: f/22
  • Minimum focus distance: 17.7 inches
  • Macro magnification ratio: 1:3.5
  • Filter diameter: 62mm
  • Accessory: Flower-shaped lens hood

2 out of 5 stars nice optics, bad implementation   December 15, 2008
J. Jojishvili (NJ)
optics are far better that from IS/non IS kit lenses that comes with Cannon XTi. pictures are better, clearer, brighter and so on an so forth. i.e. lens optical qualities are really good. not as good as L series of course but for value/money might be best selection. however there is the big downside: every time you tip the camera downwards, lens retracts! (yes I know there is a lock, but locking it makes lock your zoom as well while you are shooting, and lock is only for static i.e OFF position) which makes it completely useless! so you have to hold it with hand all the time you make pictures...

returned it after week of testing, too shame, really liked picture quality.

no doubt a very functional lens...it has great range and is comparatively very compact for what it does...the aperture is fairly standard...and it's offered at a relatively affordable price.

how you like 'em adverbs...hehe

all that being said...I've stopped using this lens and pretty much rely on my Canon 50mm f/1.4 now (while i save for the 35mm)...obviously I'm not taking too many telephoto shots...the Tamron will give you a decent functional photo...but I prefer the bokeh, color and sharpness of the latter...the canon turns out some beautiful photos (vibrant and w/ depth), the tamron always look flat by comparison...I also enjoy shooting in really low light (no flash), so I found the 3.5 aperture unsuitable in those instances.

on a side note, I think the tamron's build is very high...but I've put it through so much use and abuse that the rubber grip now comes off the lens body...tho the rest is pretty sturdy (in fact I've even used it as a seat on one occasion).

so in conclusion...if I was out on an expedition, could only take one lens and was doing research I'd take the tamron...but if i'm off with family or friends and want to create something beautiful I'd go with another lens.

5 out of 5 stars Tamron 18-250mm AF Di ILD - a winner by any count!   October 9, 2008

I have been using this lens for almost an year now and have put it through it's paces and it has held up admirably.

Image quality- Very acceptable considering the massive zoom span. Can be a bit soft on the edges at low apertures but stop the aperture down to f 11 and smaller and you get superb results. I use a monopod whenever I can and I am very pleased with the sharpness.

Build quality and durability- very durable and well built! The barrel lock is still positive as ever and the lens hood which I take off and on often, is still firm and locks positively. I use it to photograph landscapes in the harsh deserts of Saudi Arabia and has had it's share of knocks and bumps, sand storms, extreme heat and bitter cold, but the finish is still as good as new! Very impressive.

Convenience- this MUST be it's best selling feature; with this zoom range you have most of what you need..wide to tele. Doesn't get much better than this! Versatality and functionality is matchless!

Advice- make sure to retract the barrel in an lock when the lens is hanging on your neck as the heavy barrel will "zoom out" automatically due to it's weight and thus might be subject to knocks and may damage the alignment of the barrel.

Overall, a superb every-day lens. Mine is permanently on, and I take it off only when I go into ultra wide or hyper-telephoto. Definitely recommended as an everyday lens and WHAT A PRICE for this awesome zoom range!

5 out of 5 stars Tamron flexibility   August 28, 2008

Very excited about the capabilities of this lens. Fast, doesnt drain my battery (Sigma macro reduces by battery life dramatically). Not sure what to do with my kit 18-55 or my 75-300....
