Product Description The EF17-40mm f/4L USM is an ultra wide angle Canon EF zoom lens meant for professional and high amateur SLR EOS camera users. While it is an excellent lens when used with an analog SLR camera, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM is especially well suited for digital SLR cameras with an imaging sensor size smaller than the 35mm format. Indeed on such digital SLR cameras these focal lengths can give an angle of view approximately equivalent to that of a 28-70mm lens used on a 35mm camera, which makes it the ideal standard zoom lens. The EF17-40mm f/4L USM has 12 lens elements arranged in 9 groups. Super Spectra Coating on the elements ensures excellent color balance and minimizes ghosting and flare. To provide superb image quality over a 17-40mm zoom range the lens uses three aspheric elements of two different types, while Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass is used to prevent the chromatic aberrations that often can degrade the subject edge clarity.Minimum focusing distance is just 28mm throughout the entire zoom range. The Auto-focus works silently and quickly thanks to a fast central processing unit with an improved AF algorithm. You can override AF mode with manual focus should you wish. Controlled by an electromagnetic diaphragm, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM's circular aperture can achieve a more attractive appearance to out of focus background areas in a picture. The front of the lens does not rotate as you focus. This means, for example, that polarizing filters still function effectively as you zoom in and out. At the rear of the lens there's a drop-in gelatin filter holder. Highly resistant to moisture and dust, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM is ideally suited for use in harsh environments. Environment friendly lead-free glass is used throughout its construction.
Amazon.com Product Description Broaden your perspective with the Canon EF 17-40mm ultra-wide-angle zoom lens. Ideal for both film and digital SLR cameras, the lens offers three aspherical lens elements in addition to a Super UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass element, creating superior optics in all conditions. In addition, the lens focuses as close as 11 inches (0.28mm), and offers both Canon's full-time manual focus and a powerful ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) that produces fast and silent autofocus. Other features include a constant f/4 maximum aperture, the choice of screw-in 77mm filters or a holder in the rear of the lens for up to three gel filters, and optical coatings optimized for use with digital cameras. Boasting weather-resistant construction similar to other high-end L-series cameras, the lens carries a one-year warranty. - Focal length: 17-40mm

Hood included January 1, 2009 Shyguy 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great lens. I'm writing this review to let others know that a lens hood was included with the one I purchased; something I haven't seen in the product description.
Perfect Wide Angle Lens December 29, 2008 Mike Brown (Nebraska) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just received this lens today and I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised. I took a few shots in our vineyard (being that I bought this lens for landscapes) and the contrast and sharpness are very good. I've worked with other "L" series lenses and the 17-40 doesn't disappoint compared to what I am used to. Highly recommended if you are looking for a wide angle lens.
Fantastic Lens December 28, 2008 Honey Bee (Harrisburg, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had received this lens as a gift and I love it! The picture quality is great, as is with all canon lenses. The angle is beautifully defined. A great all purpose wide angle. The additional items came in handy as well-lens hood and leather tote for protection! Highly recommended!!
Think I got the wrong lens December 6, 2008 William Leupold 0 out of 14 found this review helpful
Hello Amazon, Now that I have taken some pictures and compared them to my 18-55 USM lens that came as "standard" with my Canon EOS Rebel XTI, I see NO advantage or difference. I'm comparing by taking a picture, changing lenses, taking the same picture with the new "Ultra Wide Angle" USM lens that cost almost as much as my whole camera/lens/lens package, and see NO DIFFERENCE. Is this the wrong lens? The instruction manual makes no reference to "Ultra Wide Angle" anywhere. Please advise. Thank you. William
Great wide angle range. November 29, 2008 Comdet 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got this lens for my full-frame camera (5D), and it's a great lens to get into wide angle photography - sharp and versatile, plus it's very nicely priced for an L lens. Be aware that the crop factor of APS sensor cameras makes this lens more of a 27-64mm. If you have one of these cameras and you really want to have ultra wide-angle capability, you might be better off with something like Canon's EF-S 10-22mm.
